Third Grade Perspective Landscapes

This week in the art room, third graders learned about how to show perspective in a landscape. We talked about the horizon line, which is the line that separates the earth and the sky, and the vanishing point, which is the point on the horizon lines where two lines appear to meet.

Then we drew our own landscapes with pencil first then sharpie. Students used watercolor colored pencils to add some color. These were fun for students to use because once water touched the area of color, it turned into a watercolor paint. Check out some awesome results below!

2nd Grade Heather Galler Cup Designs

This week in the art room, 2nd graders learned about a New York artist named Heather Galler. She is best known for her colorful paintings of landscapes, animals, and cups.

We studied her artwork and then learned how to make cups look three-dimensional. We talked about creating a rounded edge on the top and bottom of the cup. We also focused on different parts of the image like the foreground, middleground, and background. Next, students drew their own unique cup designs using pencil and then outlined with a sharpie. After that, the color choices were up to them! Here are some results below.

For students that finished early, they made their designs on paper come to life using play dough. They had a blast with this!

Contemporary Artists

Over the past few years, many new contemporary artists have been emerging into the art world. Here is a very long list compiled by Marcia Beckett and several other art teachers around the country. I have also added some of my own personal favorites to the list. Artists that I enjoy following include

I have also included some of my own personal artwork below! I enjoy working with oil paint, but I also have worked with metals, ceramics, drawing, and sculpture. Some of these paintings were created for commission and others were created for my own personal collection.

First Grade Snowmen at Night

In First Grade, we read the book Snowmen at Night and Snowmen at Work. We used our imagination and talked about what our snowmen might be doing at night when we are sleeping and students created their own version using chalk pastel and oil pastel. We also talked about value and shadow. With the moon shining on one side, we noticed a shadow on the other side. We used cool colors to draw a shadow with the chalk pastel. After, we added some "snowflakes" using glitter paper and glue.
